Henry Edwards Huntington was a railroad and real estate businessman in the late 1800’s. He and his wife Arabella bought the San Marino Ranch, now known as The Huntington, in 1903. Today, their legacy is alive with the thriving museum, library, and botanical gardens on the property. The once private estate became a public institution in 1928 and has welcomed guests for almost a century, sharing its collections to foster learning, inspire creative arts, and support scholarship for a variety of audiences.

    • The Huntington Library is considered to be one of the world’s best independent research libraries. It offers 12 million items from the 11th to the 21st century, including 450k rare books, 800k photographs, and 9 million manuscripts. Rare books include:

      • One of only 12 copies on vellum of the Gutenberg Bible
      • Manuscripts and early editions by Jack London and Henry David Thoreau
      • Literary archives of Charles Bukowski, Octavia E. Butler, and Hilary Mantel

    • The Botanical Gardens at The Huntington span 130 acres of the 207-acre property. It offers more than 12 themed gardens and includes more than 15k different species of plants. Garden highlights include:

      • The Garden of Flowing Fragrance features a 1.5-acre lake, a teahouse, rock bridges, and waterfalls.
      • The Desert Garden that is home to one of the largest outdoor collections of mature cacti and succulents in the world.
      • The Rose Hills Foundation Conservatory for Botanical Science with a teaching greenhouse with orchids and other tropical collections.

  • The Art Gallery Museum at The Huntington

    • Featuring European and American art spanning more than 500 years, the art museum at The Huntington includes almost 42k pieces in its collection. From decorative and folk art and paintings to drawings, photography, and sculpture, the Huntington Art Gallery offers a rare collection to share. Located in the original home of Henry and Arabella Huntington as well as the Virginia Steele Scott Galleries of American Art, the art highlighted was started with a gift from the Virginia Steele Scott Foundation in 1979 that included thousands of works of art.
